Sleep is one of my daily 4 cornerstones of good health (the others are healthy nutrition, movement and joy). When you sleep 8-9 hours you are investing in your health, mentally, emotionally and physically.
Good sleep Routine
Having a good bedtime routine can help you address your sleep problems. Then you can drift into a deep healing sleep every night, which includes dreaming. Dreaming enhances creativity and problem solving and is important for good mental health. When you have a good night’s sleep you will feel refreshed physically, mentally, and emotionally and ready for your day ahead.
3-2-1 Sleep Routine
3 hours before bed – no work
2 hours before bed – no food
1 hour before bed – no screens
In the hour before bed aim to clear your mind of your day and worries. You can drink something warm like herbal tea, Chamomile or Valerian can be soothing. Eating foods that are high in tryptophan can also prime the body for sleep. When you metabolise tryptophan it turns into serotonin and melatonin, two hormones that regulate sleep. Food rich in tryptophan include oats, nuts and milk.
Change into looser, softer clothes like pajamas. Listen to some gentle music. Read a book. Meditation can help ease the body into sleep. Or you can visualise a place where you feel calm and peaceful. Or perhaps you may prefer to try some breathing exercises to help you relax and prepare you for a deeper, quality sleep. I like to spend a few minutes thinking about what I feel grateful for that day. I also think taking a good quality Magnesium tablet in the late evening can help you enjoy a good sleep.
