How to Calm Anxiety Naturally

What Causes Anxiety?

We all have different experiences of anxiety, but what causes anxiety? It is normal to feel worry and stress, especially when you are under pressure, but when those feelings take over and turn into fear and a persistent feeling of apprehension then anxiety is present and it can feel overwhelming and debilitating.

Trying to find the root cause of your anxiety can be complicated, and there can also be more than one factor in play. anxiety can be caused by childhood trauma such as physical or emotional abuse or neglect, negative life events, bereavement or even on-going stress like bullying in the workplace, education or social setting. Exhaustion, uncertainty and loneliness can also cause anxiety.

People with anxiety can experience health problems at all levels; physical, mental and or emotional. Females are more likely to experience anxiety than males.

Different Types of Anxiety

There are several different types of anxiety; broadly speaking the different types of anxiety are Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), panic disorder, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder and separation anxiety disorder.

Symptoms of Anxiety

Symptoms of anxiety can include headaches, dizziness, stomach ache, nausea and palpitations. You might have difficulty concentrating, focusing, or making decisions. You might feel irritable, restless or tense. You can experience nausea or digestive upset. You may feel sweaty, shaky and even tremble. anxiety can also affect sleep and people often feel panicked or a sense of danger or doom.

If you suffer from Panic Disorder you will feel sudden feelings of intense anxiety, fear or even terror that can peak within minutes, known as a panic attack. In the panic attack you may experience a sense of doom, shortness of breath, chest pain and or palpitations.

Anxiety and Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be an exciting time for many women but some do experience a mixture of emotions and worry. Hormonal changes can contribute to anxiety in pregnancy as can sleep problems. Worries may turn into anxiety with palpitations, muscle tension, shortness of breath or even panic attacks being experienced. As well as affecting the mother the anxiety can affect the baby too. Post-partum anxiety can also be experienced and this again may be caused by hormonal fluctuations.

Anxiety and Menopause

Changes in your hormonal levels during perimenopause and menopause can impact your mental health causing you to feel anxious, stressed and even depressed. This anxiety can lead to panic attacks with dizziness, palpitations and fears. Changing oestrogen levels can contribute to hot flushes and sweats, weight gain, fluctuating periods, vaginal dryness and sleep disturbances.

How to Cope with Anxiety

If you suffer from anxiety then there are many ways you can calm it from breathing techniques, yoga and eating certain food. Also make sure you get enough deep sleep every night. Sleep heals and gives up the energy to cope at a mental as well as physical level. If you are not sleeping well, check your sleep routine making sure you avoid screens for at least one hour before bed, you lower the lighting in your space, you wear softer clothes and you avoid eating for at least two hours before bed.

Calming techniques include daily physical activity, it is important to find something that you enjoy and prioritise exercise like walking etc every day. Yoga is particularly helpful to calm anxiety.

Take time every day to relax and do something that engrosses you and that you enjoy, such as reading, gardening, journalling etc

Foods rich in magnesium can help you feel calmer; leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains are rich in magnesium. Foods rich in zinc have shown to lower anxiety so include cashew nuts, eggs, beef and liver in your diet too. Include Turmeric in your diet to promote better brain health and help prevent anxiety. Yogurt is a great pro-biotic and this can help increase the production of serotonin. Salmon is rich in omegas which can help you manage your anxiety better. Studies show that regularly drinking chamomile tea can also help reduce your anxiety.

There is a link between anxiety and breathing. Many people find breathing techniques can be really helpful to manage anxiety and panic attacks. You can watch my video on Breath Work here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBv6_-3a2uQ
